Topical CBD: How Creams, Oils and Serums Differ From Tinctures
Lotions, oils, serums and tinctures take very different routes through your body. Here's how to choose. · 5 min read

CBD comes in so many formats now that it's easy to assume they're all doing the same thing. They're not. A drop under your tongue and a lotion rubbed into your shoulders take very different routes through your body. Knowing the difference helps you pick the right product, use it properly and avoid wasting money.
Two routes: on the skin or into the body
Every CBD product falls roughly into one of two camps.
Topicals go on the skin: lotions, creams, balms, massage oils, serums, lip butters and intimate products. They're designed to work in the area where you apply them.
Ingestibles go into your body: tinctures, capsules, gummies, drinks. They're absorbed into the bloodstream, either through the tissue under your tongue or through your digestive system, and they act more broadly.
There's also a third, smaller group called transdermal products, like patches, which are specially formulated to push ingredients through the skin and into circulation. Most everyday creams and oils are not transdermal.
How topicals work
Your skin has its own cannabinoid receptors, part of the wider endocannabinoid system. When you apply a CBD topical, the CBD interacts with the skin and the tissue just beneath it. With a regular topical, very little is expected to reach your bloodstream.
That's a big part of why topicals appeal to so many people. You can use them where you want them, when you want them, without the same considerations as swallowing something. For intimate products in particular, local use is the whole point.
A fair caveat: research on topical CBD is still early. Many people describe topicals as soothing or calming for the skin, and studies are looking at things like dryness and skin comfort, but it's not settled science yet. Treat any brand that promises dramatic results with caution.
How tinctures work
A tincture is CBD in a carrier oil, taken with a dropper. Most people hold it under the tongue for 30 to 60 seconds before swallowing, which lets some absorb through the tissue there.
Because it enters your system, a few things matter more with tinctures:
- Serving size. Follow the label and go slowly.
- THC content. Full-spectrum tinctures contain trace THC, which matters if you're drug tested.
- Medications. CBD taken by mouth can affect how your liver processes some medicines. If you take prescription drugs, ask your doctor or pharmacist first.
- Timing. Effects, if you notice any, come on more gradually than with a topical.
Our Tantric Tincture is our one ingestible. It's a full-spectrum blend with burdock root, terpenes and B vitamins, made for slowing down and getting in the mood before time together. Everything else we make is topical.
Lotion, oil, serum, balm: what's the difference?
Within topicals, the base matters a lot. It decides how the product feels, how long it lasts and where you can use it.
Lotions and creams
A mix of water and oils that absorbs fairly quickly. Good for everyday use on large areas of skin. Our Zen X10 and Perky Pear and Berries lotions each have 300 mg CBD with shea butter, cocoa butter, aloe and chamomile. These are for body skin, not intimate areas.
Oils
Silky, slow to absorb and long-lasting. Great for massage and for intimacy when you want glide that doesn't dry out. Our Intimate Oil is just organic coconut oil and CBD. The big thing to know: oils break down latex condoms, so don't use oil-based products with latex.
Water-based serums and sprays
Light, easy to rinse off and generally compatible with latex condoms and most toys. They may need reapplying more often than oils. Our Hydro Glide Relief serum is pH-balanced and water-based with aloe, and our Hydro Glide Sensation spray adds peppermint and a touch of capsaicin for a tingle.
Balms and butters
Thick and protective, made with butters and waxes. Ideal for small areas that need a barrier, like lips. Our lip butters, including Mint Condition, have 25 mg CBD in a cocoa-butter base.
Oil-based vs. water-based for intimacy
This is where people most often get tripped up, so here's the simple version:
- Using latex condoms? Choose water-based. Oil can weaken latex and make a condom more likely to tear.
- Not using condoms, or using non-latex ones like polyisoprene? Check the condom box. Polyurethane condoms are oil-compatible. Polyisoprene is not.
- Using silicone toys? Water-based is the safest pairing. Most oils are fine with silicone, but always check the toy maker's advice.
- Want long-lasting glide or massage? Oil-based tends to last longer.
- Prone to irritation or infections? Some people find oils don't suit them internally. Pay attention to how your body responds and choose what feels best.

How to get the most from a topical
- Patch test first. A small amount on your inner arm, then wait a day.
- Apply to clean skin. Lotions absorb best on slightly damp skin after a shower.
- Use enough. A thin, even layer works better than a dab.
- Be consistent. With body and lip care especially, regular use makes the biggest difference.
- Store it well. Keep products away from heat and direct sun. Coconut oil goes solid when cool and melts when warm, which is normal.
Which should you pick?
If you want something for your skin, lips or intimate comfort, a topical is the natural choice, and it's what most of our customers start with. If you're specifically interested in a mood-setting ritual you take by mouth, a tincture is the one to look at, with the label and your doctor's advice in mind.
